ADULTS -Making Jun Tea w/ Ioana Popescu
Learn the art of making kombucha with honey for a delicious "Jun Tea."
Service Description
If you are thinking about making your own kombucha, this class is for you. In this class, you will learn how to make honey kombucha (aka jun tea) kombucha. It follows the same steps as making kombucha with the main difference being the use of honey instead of sugar. If you like a fizzy drink that is not soda, this is a place to start. Kombucha is made by fermenting a sweetened tea using a SCOBY – symbiotic cultures of bacteria and yeasts. The yeasts are similar to the brewing yeasts that make beer and wine and transform the sugar / honey into alcohol and CO2. The bacteria are similar to the bacteria we use to make yogurt. Advantages of making your own kombucha or jun tea: - cost - no unwanted additives - live probiotics - endless options for flavor combinations Not everyone enjoys or even likes kombucha… you might determine if you do or don’t before, even while I might hope to convince you that kombucha is very diverse and you might like it. Why drink kombucha? - it is delicious - contains probiotics, antioxidants and other beneficial phytochemicals Participants will receive a recipe handout, have the opportunity to sample different kombuchas and go home with their own jar of tea to ferment. Ioana Popescu is a Professor Emerita of Biology and Botany and has been making kombucha for ~ 8 years. Drinks + Snacks provided This workshop is hosted at the Wild Arts Learning Center.
